Temporary Accommodation Frequently Asked Questions.

We specialize in assisting consumers with obtaining temporary accommodation while their home or workspace remains uninhabitable due to the events of their insurance claim. From hotels, apartments, and homes to temporary offices and custom commercial suite build outs, Away Home will work with you to ensure your needs are met.

Below are some Frequently Asked Questions presented to us over the years:

Do I have enough coverage for my additional living expenses?

The amount and duration of Additional Living Expense or Loss of Use coverage depend upon the terms, limits, and conditions of the applicable insurance policy. Before committing to temporary accommodations, consumers should understand the benefits available under their policy and evaluate whether the anticipated housing expenses can be sustained for the expected displacement period.

Away Home can coordinate temporary housing and related relocation logistics. When policy-specific advice or interpretation is requested, those services are provided separately by a licensed Michigan Resident Insurance Counselor pursuant to a written Insurance Counselor Agreement.

How does your company get paid for providing temporary accommodation services?

There are two primary methods through which Away Home may receive payment for completed temporary housing services: a service agreement incorporating Direct Payment Authorization language or a service agreement incorporating a limited Assignment of Benefits.

A service agreement incorporating Direct Payment Authorization language authorizes an insurer to issue payment directly to Away Home for completed services but does not require the insurer to do so.

A service agreement incorporating a limited Assignment of Benefits assigns specified post-loss contractual rights relating to the benefits necessary to pay for Away Home's services. Consumers should carefully review any Assignment of Benefits before signing it, as it transfers certain post-loss contractual rights relating to the assigned benefits.

When Away Home accepts a valid Assignment of Benefits, it is intentionally drafted in a narrow manner and limited to the specific post-loss contractual rights necessary to secure payment for the temporary housing services provided by Away Home.

Do you work directly with my insurance company or do I need to be the go-between?

Whether Away Home communicates directly with your insurance company depends upon the service agreement you choose and your preferences regarding communication.

Under a service agreement incorporating Direct Payment Authorization language, consumers typically remain the primary point of contact with their insurance company while authorizing the insurer to issue payment directly to Away Home for completed services, if the insurer elects to do so.

Under a service agreement incorporating a limited Assignment of Benefits, Away Home may communicate directly with the insurance company regarding the specific post-loss contractual rights assigned to Away Home that relate to payment for its temporary housing services. The Assignment of Benefits does not transfer rights beyond the limited benefits identified within the agreement.

I’m already working with a company like Away Home and I’m not happy – can I switch companies?

Consumers who are dissatisfied with their current temporary accommodations may have options depending upon the terms of their existing agreements. We encourage consumers to review those agreements carefully before making changes to any existing service arrangements.

I found a rental home on Airbnb. Is that potentially an option?

In many circumstances, short-term rental properties such as those offered through Airbnb or similar platforms may be suitable temporary housing options. The appropriateness of any particular property depends upon factors including availability, location, occupancy, cost, and the circumstances of the displacement.

Away Home routinely evaluates a wide variety of temporary housing options and can assist in coordinating accommodations appropriate to each individual assignment.

My family has special needs… is this something Away Home can address?

We recognize that every family has unique circumstances, and we understand that temporary housing often involves considerations beyond simply finding an available place to stay. When coordinating temporary accommodations, Away Home works closely with families to understand their individual needs, including handicap accessibility, mobility considerations, sensory sensitivities, and other factors that may influence appropriate housing options.

While every assignment is different and available housing varies by location and availability, we make every reasonable effort to identify accommodations that appropriately address the unique needs of the individuals we serve.
